Housing for Exchange and non-EEA degree students

HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht works with two housing organisations: SSH and Xior. You'll find their application procedures below.

Quick facts:

  • Accommodation is in short supply and allocated on a first come, first serve basis. So apply as soon as you can.
  • Housing via these organisations is let for a fixed period of five, ten or 12 months only. 
  • SSH charges 9% taxes on top of the rental fee for any rental period under six months. 
  • You are expected to clean your own accommodation during your stay.
  • You can buy bedlinen from both organisations when you arrive.

Applications for Spring

Applications for Spring (SSH only) open in October 2021.


At the Willem Dreeslaan 113, we can offer a limited number of ground-floor and first-floor rooms. These rooms are for a fixed period from 6 August 2021 to 1 August 2022, and are currently fully booked.

If you are interested in one of these rooms, please send an email to housing@hu.nl. We will send you information on how to apply and a log-in code, which allows you to register with this housing organisation and apply for any available accommodation. Please note, Xior charges a registration fee of € 25 (non-refundable).

After you have applied, we will do a final check to make sure you are indeed a short stay student at HU, and your room can be confirmed.

SSH Short Stay

Registration for Spring opens on 18 October 2021 (09.00 CEST), booking opens on 10 November 2021 (09.00 CET).

Housing via SSH Short Stay is very popular and HU reserves a limited number of rooms. So make sure to register in time and be ready at 10 November 09.00 CET, to book a room.

Fall and Full Year rooms are still fully booked. You will not be informed in the case accommodation becomes available again due to a cancellation. Check the SSH website regularly in case a room opens up.

Have a look to check what sort of housing you can expect via SSH's dedicated HU homepage. Then apply for reserved housing in a few easy steps. Please note, registration is free. Only when you submit a reservation, you pay a fee of € 78,50. These rooms are for a fixed period of 5 or 10 months.

To register, go to SSH Short Stay's registration website and fill in your details. SSH Short Stay will send you an email confirming your registration.

HU's International Office needs to approve your application. They check all new registrations against those accepted as international students. Once your application is approved, SSH will send you an email containing a password; you are now ready to start your search in earnest!

Log in at My SSH and find your accommodation. Take your time to find a place that suits your needs.

Once you have found your accommodation, you make a reservation and transfer your down payment. Once your down payment is received by SSH, your reservation is finalised. 

Please note: Your down payment consists of the rent for the first and the last month, the reservation fee and a cleaning fee. The down payment is non-refundable. 

Please note: By finalising a reservation with SSH, you agree to the terms and conditions stated on the SSH website.

Changing your registration

You can change your personal details or preferred rental period via SSHXL. Please note, if you change your rental period, SSH will ask HU for confirmation again.

Cancelling your accommodation

Please be aware of the following when booking a room at SSH: Your down payment consists of the rent for the first and the last month, the reservation fee and a cleaning fee. The down payment is non-refundable.

As stated in the terms and conditions, cancellation or reduction after the start of the rental period is not permitted, apart from cases provided for by article 2.8. This means that you are responsible for the payment of the entire rental period, even if you don't use the accommodation.
