In the Research group Digital Smart Services we work on the development of meaningful digital services. We study how professionals can be supported with methods and tools in the development of digital services, which digital and ethical competencies are needed for this, and how they can develop such competencies in the best possible way.

Lines of research within the research group

Data-driven technology is almost unlimited in its capacity to make new things possible. How can professionals utilise this technology in such a way that it benefits society, and what digital and ethical competencies are required for them to achieve this?

The introduction of new technology necessitates a careful process of embedding it into the relevant context. How can professionals plan this process in such a way that it benefits society, and what digital and ethical competencies are required?

The use of new technology in education makes it possible to devise and design new forms of education and supervision. How can professionals arrange and use the technology in such a way that the field of education benefits, and what digital and ethical competencies are required?

Education

The Research group Digital Smart Services provides various HU degree programmes with digital tools. It is also closely involved with the HU Blockchainlab. The research group is affiliated with the IT Institute, the Institute for Media, and the Archimedes Institute.

Example of a technological development Marlies van Steenbergen

“Digital services should not only be meaningful in the sense of being directly valuable to an organisation or customer, but also meaningful in an ethical sense. Ethical policy must therefore be an integral part of the organisational design.”

Marlies van Steenbergen Professor of Digital Smart Services

Collaboration

Many companies and organisations share the research group’s focus areas. This often means that substantive expertise and IT knowledge find themselves conjoined. The research group carries out assignments and projects and conducts research in collaboration and (co-)financing with partners.
