Utrecht Summer School celebrates forty years
This summer, the Utrecht Summer School celebrates its fortieth anniversary. What began in the 1980s as a way to strengthen the international profile of higher education in Utrecht has grown into an international educational programme that brings together thousands of students, researchers, lecturers and professionals every year.
This year, the Summer School will once again welcome nearly 3,000 participants. HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht has been a partner for decades and is contributing to the programme in this anniversary year as well. On 7 July, the fortieth anniversary was celebrated with all partner institutions* during the opening ceremony in the gardens of the Centraal Museum. During the event, Eva Reuling, member of HU’s Executive Board, delivered a speech.
“The strength of the Summer School lies in the summer period itself: outside the regular academic year, there is room to experiment and bring together people who might otherwise never meet,” says Eva Reuling. “Students, PhD candidates, lecturers and professionals attend courses and masterclasses together, learning from each other’s backgrounds, expertise and experiences during a few intensive weeks. For HU, it is also a practical way to shape internationalisation: students collaborate with people from other countries, while lecturers expand their networks and discover new educational approaches.”
HU courses with a strong practical focus
HU contributes to the Summer School with 27 courses covering a wide range of subjects. Popular themes within the HU offering include data science, business studies, and European & Dutch studies. What distinguishes HU courses is their emphasis on practice-oriented learning: participants collaborate with professionals, work on current real-world challenges, and experience how education, research and the region are connected.
Broader diversity
Today, diversity means more than simply having international participants. Educational institutions, researchers and societal organisations are increasingly finding each other through the Summer School. International perspectives are linked to regional practice. For example, students visit healthcare organisations in the Utrecht region. The programme also reflects current developments, with themes such as health, sustainability, climate adaptation, artificial intelligence, migration and democracy.
The programme is also becoming increasingly relevant for professionals, as demand grows for continuing education on rapidly emerging topics such as AI.
A growing Utrecht knowledge network
The network and collaboration between Utrecht-based knowledge institutions within the Summer School have strengthened in recent years. The recent addition of the University of Humanistic Studies demonstrates that the network continues to grow, further strengthening both the programme itself and Utrecht’s position as an international knowledge region.
