Images increasingly shape public debate: they circulate rapidly online and influence how people interpret societal issues. Communication professionals, policy organizations, designers, and social entrepreneurs want to be able to respond effectively, but currently lack a practical tool for systematically interpreting visual material and substantiating intervention choices. Furthermore, it remains unclear which conditions and forms of collaboration are needed to develop and scale such an innovation within complex partnerships.

This KIEM MV project explores and develops a first version of an image analysis framework that combines Critical Discursive Psychology with visual analysis and design-oriented research.

Objective

The project aims to develop an image analysis framework that can be used for the early detection and interpretation of image-driven issues in public debate, while doing justice to the way images convey meaning and interact with text and context. The analysis model is intended for impact entrepreneurs and communication professionals working for public organizations.

Results

In addition to methodological outcomes, the project will deliver tangible products to support use, adoption, and knowledge sharing: a practical codebook to facilitate coding and interpretation, and a compact training toolkit consisting of exercises that support application in both professional practice and education. Through targeted dissemination activities, the image analysis framework will be made available for broader use.

Approach

The project is design-oriented and exploratory: we develop an analytical tool, test it on a clearly defined pilot corpus, and validate it in collaboration with practice partners.

Education impact

In addition to methodological outcomes, the project will deliver tangible products to support use, adoption, and knowledge sharing: a practical codebook to facilitate coding and interpretation, and a compact training toolkit consisting of exercises that support application in both professional practice and education. Through targeted dissemination activities, the image analysis framework will be made available for broader use.
