ELLI investigates how living environments and neighbourhood settings can serve as a driving force for health, inclusion, and prevention at the community level. We focus on all residents, with special attention to those who are more vulnerable, such as older adults, people with cognitive impairments, and individuals at increased risk of falling. Drawing on our expertise, we concentrate on promoting physical activity and preventing fall incidents within the smart living environment while taking lower (digital) health literacy into account.

Objective

An inclusive, safe, and smart living environment in which people can live independently, safely, and healthy for a longer period of time. We work in two living labs, Waalre and Emmen. Together with residents, municipalities, care providers, and industry partners we develop solutions and interventions and test them in daily life. This way, we combine the design of the living environment with smart technologies (including AI, interactive applications, and monitoring) and policies that support inclusion and health.

Results

  • Insight into limiting and enabling (environmental) factors that affect, among other things, physical activity, as well as participating in social activities and daily tasks.
  • Accessible, appropriate, and smart solutions that support people in being physically active and engaging in social activities.
  • A new evaluation method to assess these solutions.
