How do Dutch news consumers value foreign news?

How do Dutch news consumers value the selection by foreign editors and to what extent are the foreign developments that they consider important covered?

Objective

The Dutch news audience has traditionally been very interested in foreign news. Which foreign events make it to the Dutch news media often stems from the slogan “If it bleeds, it leads”. It is not known whether Dutch consumers of foreign news are always waiting for this because this has hardly been researched.

Results

This research may reveal a partial mismatch between editors' choices and the needs of their audiences. These findings could enable journalists and editors from foreign newsrooms to better connect with their existing audiences and broaden their target audience, helping more people learn about foreign affairs in these tumultuous times.

Duration

01 September 2023 - 01 July 2024

Approach

The answer to the main question comes from five focus groups, each with 8 people who follow foreign news at least three times a week and are asked to keep track of what news they have consumed for a week and to take photos of it or forward the links.
