Making Space Together
Municipalities aim to create car-light neighbourhoods, but residents are often reluctant to give up their private cars. This project investigates how a combination of temporary street redesign, Augmented Reality (AR), and social training can encourage the shift to shared mobility. Through living labs in five municipalities, we assess impacts on public support, behavioural change, and scalability.
Objective
This project aims to determine how temporary street redesign, Augmented Reality (AR), and social training can jointly increase the acceptance and actual use of shared mobility. By addressing key barriers to behavioural change, the project supports municipalities in the transition towards car-light neighbourhoods with improved liveability and climate resilience.
Results
The project will deliver a scientifically validated, scalable intervention framework that helps municipalities implement the most effective combination of AR, social training, and temporary street redesign.
Approach
Using a quasi-experimental design, we compare interventions and measure their effects on public support, shared mobility adoption, permit relinquishment, and scalability in living labs across five municipalities.
Education impact
The project will provide new knowledge and practical tools for municipalities, shared mobility providers, and urban planners to support the transition to car-light neighbourhoods. For education, it offers a real-world learning environment in which students gain experience with participation processes, behavioural change, urban transitions, and digital innovations such as AR. The findings will be translated into educational modules, practical guidelines, and a scalable intervention framework for professional practice.
