Esther van Loon

Researcher

Esther van Loon has been affiliated as a researcher at the Research group Deaf Studies since 2018. Her work is primarily concerned with ways to improve the current assessment of language proficiency of Dutch sign language.

Esther has been working as a lecturer at the Institute for Sign Language & Deaf Studies since 2013. She is a certified sign language specialist and her current tasks at the institute include providing linguistic (sign) lessons. She is also responsible for assessment and related matters.

The purpose of conducting research into assessment is to arrive at (more) valid and reliable comprehension tests for Dutch Sign Language. In order to achieve this, attempts are being made to couple the assessment of sign languages with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Esther is particularly well-equipped to conduct this research, given her knowledge of sign language linguistics, sign language acquisition and assessment methods.
