Jan Roelof Polling graduated in 1998 as an Orthoptist at HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. Since 2009 he has been working as a lecturer for the full-time bachelor's degree in Orthoptics and Optometry. He conducts doctoral research into the development and treatment of progressive myopia in children.

For his doctoral research, Jan Roelof uses clinical data from treatments performed at the ophthalmology outpatient clinic of the Erasmus Medical Centre, as well as data from the population screening Generation R. In this study, children born in Rotterdam are examined at different moments during their early years, whereby the development of their eyes and the influence of the environment are also taken into consideration.

Jan Roelof is senior lecturer for the Orthoptics degree programme.
Within the research group, Jan Roelof hopes soon to be able to tackle the question whether we can positively influence the development of our eyes, and to thereby create good 'Eye health in the built environment'.
