Natalia Moreira

Teacher Creative Business
Dr. Moreira is a firm believer in universalising the access to sustainability in all its forms, Natalia has held a PhD since 2017 and has been engaged in expanding the knowledge in the field towards all ages and educational levels.

Biography

Holder of a PhD in Sustainability by the University of Manchester (UK), MSc in Eco-efficient products development by the Politecnico di Torino (Italy), and BSc in Textile and Fashion by the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil), Natalia is an interdisciplinary researcher and Project Manager with focus on products, sustainable consumption and circular economy.

With a strong technical research and publication record, Natalia has been in the field of product development since 2007, advising global fashion brands and completing research on sustainable textiles for action-oriented change projects, and contributing to vital academic debates on sustainability. Natalia also has an interest in software development and has skills and client relationships in this area, in countries such as Canada, the UK, Italy, Brazil and Germany. Natalia’s research emphasises direct engagement with diverse stakeholder groups involved in product supply chains, which has enabled her to successfully develop new models of sustainability futures and systems thinking in her research.

“I thrive on projects grounded in both technical aspects of industrial engineering and big picture ‘sustainability’ themes; I have an extensive international network of academic and industry practitioners which has enabled me to take a global approach to my career trajectory”.

After three years as a postdoc at Aalto University in Finland, coordinating the European Commission-funded (Horizon 2020) New Cotton Project, Natalia decided to join the teaching team at the Utrecht University of Applied Sciences. An avid believer in the importance of education she has been engaged in teaching courses connected to the research-front of the Creative Business programme in courses like ‘Research Design’ and ‘Research-base Prototype’ as well as courses sustainability-oriented courses such as ‘Technology for Good’. Also venturing into new territory like the ‘Effective Communication’ and ‘Challenging Human Bias’ courses.

Research theme

Strongly committed to research since 2006 Natalia’s research projects, publications and qualifications revolve around the fields of sustainability, textiles and consumer engagement; eventually focusing on  the various aspects of circularity. With various experiences in Brazil and Europe her selection of most important work can be found below:

General project description

This European Union-funded project brings together a consortium of 12 participants across the textile industry production value chain which harnesses collaboration and cutting-edge technology to create new knowledge in circular fashion. In the NEW COTTON project, the twelve pioneering players are coming together to break new ground by demonstrating a circular model for commercial garment production.

During a three-year period, textile waste is to be collected and sorted, and regenerated into a new, man-made cellulosic fibre that looks and feels like cotton – a “new cotton” – using Infinited Fiber Company’s textile fibre regeneration technology. The fibres will be used to create different types of fabrics for clothing that will be designed, manufactured and sold by global brands adidas and H&M. The project also aims to act as an inspiration and steppingstone for further, even bigger circular initiatives in the industry going forward.

Each of the 12 participants in this project has a unique role in defining a blueprint for circularity in textiles. Infinited Fiber Company will create its unique, cellulosebased textile fibres (cellulose carbamate fibres) out of post-consumer textile waste. Frankenhuis and Xamk will be working on the pre-processing and research for pre-treatment of textile waste. Manufacturers Inovafil, Tekstina and Kipas will use the regenerated fibres to produce yarns, woven fabrics and denim, respectively. REvolve Waste, RISE and Aalto University will collect and provide data and conduct research and analysis. Fashion for Good will lead on communications with the industry. Design and manufacture of the fibres into clothing will be done by H&M and Adidas.
