Amelisweerd and USP sustainable society

This project, based on an article in Trajectum, aims to bring USP and estate Amelisweerd to an organic and sustainable collaboration. Amelisweerd can become both a relaxation area and a living lab for students and teachers of HU and UU and for employees and patients of the UMC. A network of enthusiastic developers has now been established and we organize various activities.

Objective

The aim is to develop a synergistic collaboration between Amelisweerd and USP. Students often do not know that the area exists. USP could increase sustainability by embracing Amelisweerd and using it as a relaxation and living learning environment and by developing strategic cooperation and exchange. At the same time, USP can contribute to the protection of the historical nature reserve Amelisweerd with its own knowledge bases and institutes (HU, UU, UMC). The goal is to integrate this project within in a European grant application.

Results

  • Formation of a network and  establishing awareness and investigating the potential of organic collaboration between Amelisweerd and USP for the benefit of sustainability, student well-being, greening of the curriculum.
  • Compose and submit a European research application, deadline for submission March 2026.

Duration

23 January 2025 - 23 March 2026

Approach

Participatory Action Research and the preparation of a European grant project. In between we organize different local activities, such as (silence)walks, presentations and workshops.

"Isn’t precisely the envisioned  deep connection between the Uithof/USP and Amelisweerd that is an important key for both to flourish and to have a unique added value, in relation to the municipality and the province of Utrecht as a whole? "

Montessori & Wessels, 2024

Impact on education

We work with students and teachers to incorporate more green knowledge into the curricula. We develop activity with students and teachers, for instance during Utrecht Science Week (september 2025)
