Disengaged or critical news user - the users of alternative news media in the Netherlands

Several studies show a connection between the increased choice of using alternative news sources online and distrust in journalism. Despite the fact that alternative media use is not a new phenomenon, we still know very little about the news users of such media.

Objective

In this study, we want to find out more about news users who do not feel seen and heard by the established media. We want to know what their media use looks like and relates to their attitudes toward news media.

Results

The findings of the study were presented at Etmaal 2023 and ICA 2023 and published in this longread. Researcher Dr. Renée van der Nat also interacted with some dissatisfied news users in this podcast.
