The Netherlands is currently facing a significant increase in construction activity, driven by the renovation of existing infrastructure, renewal of old buildings and the development of new residential areas. At the same time, the construction sector is under growing pressure to reduce environmental impact, most notable emissions, while ensuring urban safety, livability, and accessibility. Construction logistics plays a central role in this challenge, as the continuous flow of materials, equipment and waste to and from construction sites directly affects traffic conditions and related emissions and therefore the quality of the local urban environment.
The conceptual Digital Twin (DT) Uses Framework is designed to bridge the gap between the theoretical potential of Digital Twins and their practical application in construction logistics. By providing a methodology to identify relevant and feasible Digital Twin applications, the conceptual framework sets the foundation for assessing the potential uses of Digital Twins within the construction logistics sector. It identifies the value Digital Twins can deliver, the stakeholders who benefit from it, and an understanding of how these values can be realized. As the first step toward developing a complete DT Uses Framework for construction logistics, this report outlines a conceptual framework that serves as a foundation to be further developed and refined within the context of the LOKET project; by applying this framework to different use cases, the framework sheds light on deeper insights of each use case, ultimately helping to define what Digital Twins mean for construction logistics and providing a clear, practical pathway for their application in the sector.
The conceptual framework was used to compare the three use cases from a municipality perspective (Den Bosch), a contractor perspective (Utrecht) and a Bouwhub perspective (Eindhoven). Across these cases, multiple DT uses identified in the framework were translated into concrete applications through the development of case-specific Digital Twin demonstrators.
