The Netherlands is increasingly facing pressure on its drinking water system due to housing development, climate change and growing water demand. The Collective Circular Water project explores how collective rainwater systems can contribute to water-conscious and future-proof urban development.

Objective

The project aims to develop and test a collective circular water system for urban area development. The project investigates how rainwater can be locally collected, stored and reused to reduce drinking water demand and make urban areas more resilient to drought and extreme rainfall.

Results

  • Technical blueprint for collective rainwater reuse
  • Real-life validation through urban development pilots
  • Roadmap for permitting and governance
  • Validated business case for implementation and scaling
  • Insights into success factors and implementation barriers
  •

Approach

Knowledge institutes, governments and market parties collaborate on real-life pilots, technical testing and research into governance, permitting and financing. The insights gained are translated into a scalable approach for future urban area developments.

The project focuses not only on technology, but also on governance, permitting, management and financing. By combining real-life pilots with research, the project develops a practical approach for future housing and urban development projects.

Education impact

The project offers students and professionals the opportunity to work on current challenges related to drinking water, climate adaptation and urban development. Through real-life pilots, research and collaboration with governments and market parties, students gain experience with technical, legal and organizational innovations in the built environment. In addition, the project provides new knowledge, practical cases and methodologies that can be directly applied in education, research and professional practice related to water-conscious construction and integrated urban area management.
