Immersive eXperience Lab

  • Project
  • March 2024 – December 2026

At HU, we focus on human-centered digitalization to promote broad prosperity. Immersive Experiences (IX), such as XR and the metaverse, open up new opportunities for learning and experiencing—both in education and in business. IX also offers opportunities in research: it can foster collaboration and stimulates innovation.

Objective

In the Immersive Experience Lab (IX-Lab), we explore how extended reality (XR) can create value in social learning and interprofessional collaboration. We experiment with immersive technologies to enrich education, learning experiences, and professional practice, and to explore complex scenarios that are hard to realize in real life. We also investigate how XR can support organizations (e.g., digital twins, scenario development) and expand our research methods with approaches such as biometric studies and systemic constellations.

XR technology can enrich hybrid learning environments with realistic simulations, interactive and sensory experiences, flexibility, and personalized learning. It offers inclusive solutions, soft skills training, and virtual labs, while the IX-Lab serves as a hub for education, research, innovation, and collaboration.

Results

  • Design-based research into the applications and value creation of XR in interprofessional practice and social learning.
  • Active collaboration within HU between education and research.
  • Learning community where education, practice, and research are structurally connected around XR applications.
  • International academic network for knowledge sharing, collaboration, and valorization of XR research.
  • Developed vision and approach for XR in hybrid education and research, supported by technical and content expertise.
  • Development of educational use cases and identification of new opportunities for further growth.

Duration

01 March 2024 - 31 December 2026

Approach

Within the IX-Lab, a team of design-based researchers with expertise in digitalization, XR, and Immersive Experiences works on challenges from research, education, and professional practice. They collaborate with students, lecturers, and researchers both within HU and beyond.
