Objective

The aim of the project is to develop a sociotechnical toolbox for Responsible AI Procurement that supports municipalities in the conscious, contextual and responsible procurement of AI applications, by identifying, testing and managing ethical-legal, social and technical risks, so that public value is realized within applicable laws and regulations.

In doing so, the project explicitly focuses on supporting municipalities in testing AI applications in their own organizational and social context, so that risks can be recognized and adjusted in a timely manner not only before, but also during implementation and use.

Results

The project provides a tested RAP design, a sociotechnical toolbox, evaluation procedures and test instruments with which municipalities can concretely assess, compare and responsibly purchase AI.

Approach

The project adopts a design science approach with short iterative cycles, combining practice and science through co-design, Value Sensitive Design, prototyping and evaluation of sociotechnical solutions in realistic procurement contexts.

Education impact

The project aims to have a direct impact because the municipalities involved can already improve their AI procurement practices during the research and deal more consciously with public values. Through broad dissemination, the project influences policy, market practices and collaboration around responsible AI. In education, the project structurally increases the capacity of professionals with in-depth knowledge of AI, ethics and design for complex social issues, because students and teachers actively participate in real cases and applicable solutions.
