Towards a Common Language for Immersive Experiences

Immersive experiences draw people into an environment or activity. But how do different sectors understand and evaluate these experiences? CIIIC START explores a common language to support knowledge exchange and help professionals discuss how immersive experiences can be developed and used effectively and responsibly.
Objective
The project aims to understand how different sectors describe, design and evaluate immersive experiences. We explore similarities and differences in concepts, design assumptions, intended outcomes and evaluation. These insights will inform a conceptual blueprint that supports a common language and mutual understanding across sectors.
Results
Expected results include insights into similarities and differences across sectors and a conceptual blueprint supporting a common language for describing and evaluating immersive experiences.
Approach
We combine a rapid review with interviews across sectors and collaborative workshops. The insights are brought together in a conceptual blueprint and shared with researchers and professionals.
Education impact
A common language can help professionals across sectors discuss expectations, design choices and evaluation of immersive experiences. In education, the conceptual blueprint could help teachers and students compare concepts and examples from practice. The project provides a foundation for knowledge exchange and further research into effective and responsible immersive experiences. Applying these insights in courses and professional practice will require further development with educators and practitioners following this exploratory project.
