In the Netherlands, the healthcare sector produces approximately 85 million kg of incontinence materials annually, accounting for 7-8% of the total waste volume in healthcare. This enormous waste stream is not only harmful to the environment due to CO₂ emissions, water and raw material consumption, but also costly in terms of production, transport and processing.

Objective

The main objective is to break the implementation deadlock of sustainable incontinence care. We achieve this by validating a 'washable incontinence system' that integrates logistics, economics, and user dignity, delivering the evidence base required for national upscaling.

Results

The result of WIN-Z is a validated washable incontinence system for healthcare institutions that meets the needs of end users: clients and healthcare professionals. The validated system can then be upscaled across the Netherlands and serve as a catalyst for the transition to sustainable healthcare.

Approach

The project takes an integrated approach through two work packages:

  • Inventory and selection of existing washable incontinence materials and washing systems and pilot in testing grounds,
  • Creation of a washable incontinence system.

This project contributes to the achievement of the SDGs. Primarily, it contributes to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being); SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation); and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

The project is co-financed by Health Holland PPS Grant.

Education impact

This project makes a unique and scientifically substantiated contribution to the field of sustainable healthcare by creating, for the first time, an integrated, practice-based and multidisciplinary insight into the feasibility of washable incontinence materials for adult target groups across the chain. The project fills a substantial knowledge gap regarding the environmental, cost and dignity effects of reusable incontinence products in healthcare institutions, which is necessary to accelerate the transition to washable products.
