Jeroen van Grondelle is a researcher within the Digital Ethics Research Group, focusing on value sensitive design of (public) services. In addition, he teaches research methods in the Master of Informatics program and innovation skills in the part-time bachelor program in Business, IT, and Management.

In recent years, Jeroen has conducted research with government bodies into the citizen perspective on public services. The government aims to better align with citizens and be more proactive in its service delivery. It also wants to apply a more human-centered approach than it did in the past. But what do citizens actually think about this? And how can governments incorporate the voice of citizens early on - when designing their services - rather than afterwards, after citizens maybe responded quite differently than expected?

In his research, he pays special attention to public services in which algorithms play a role. These are services where both citizens and civil servants have to interact with algorithms. This leads to new ways of working and often shifts in roles. How can we design these systems in a way that works for everyone?

At the start of his career, Jeroen worked for several years at IT consulting firms and, in 2006, co-founded a startup where he served as Research Director. He developed the concepts behind an innovative, AI-driven platform for complex business processes for large international companies and government bodies. In that role, he led the startup’s participation in several European FP7 research projects in areas such as process modeling, business rules, the semantic web, and computational linguistics.

He studied mathematics at Utrecht University, specializing in algorithm design and large-scale parallel computing.
