In 2017, Nicole started as a junior researcher at the research group Speech and Language Therapy: Participation through Communication. Until 2019, she contributed to various research projects that, in different ways, aimed to improve the communicative participation of adults with communication disorders, particularly people with aphasia. Communicative participation means taking part in situations where communication plays a central role. Optimizing communicative participation is one of the key outcomes of speech and language therapy. Until recently, however, this outcome could not be measured. Between 2019 and 2025, she conducted her PhD research, in which she developed a patient-reported outcome measure to validly and reliably assess communicative participation.
