A Design-Oriented Journey Through the Professional Self

Specialized nurses face the challenge of training colleagues, teams, and other relevant individuals in an increasingly complex care environment. This need is intensified by staff shortages and rising care demands. Despite the crucial role of professional development, specialized nurses encounter obstacles in transferring knowledge and skills to their colleagues.

Objective

The findings of this PhD research provide concrete tools for training en supervising specialized nurses, so that they can more effectively fulfil their role in the professional development of others.
The aim of this research is to gain both scientific and practical insights that support the professional development of nurses, ultimately contributing to better care delivery.

The PhD research follows a design-oriented approach that integrates practice and theory to identify and test professionalization methods. This will be done in close collaboration with professional and educational practice.

Results

The PhD research:

  • generates transferable knowledge about the development of the professional self in the role of promoting the expertise of others from a design-oriented research approach.
  • provides concrete theories of action that are relevant to both professional practice and education. The aim is to equip (future) healthcare professionals even better for their role in promoting the expertise of others.
  • contributes to the redesign of educational modules within post-graduate education, in particular aimed at strengthening the integration of the professional self within nursing professional tasks.
  • contributes to the professionalization of (guest) lecturers within post-graduate education.

Duration

01 September 2024 - 31 August 2028

Approach

The PhD research follows a design oriented approach, structured according to the three-process model and the four phases of design-oriented research. We start by describing a conceptual framework of the professional self, based on existing theory and practical research.
