All aboard
Mathematical problem-solving is a new learning objective for primary education in the Netherlands; in Flanders it is a topic for a thematic test. Textbooks and other resources contain hardly any suitable mathematical problems, certainly not for students with weak arithmetic skills. To give all students the opportunity to develop problem solving skills, problems are needed that are accessible and challenging for all students. Additionally, teachers require didactic support to guide problem-solving activities.
Goal
The objective of 'All aboard' is to develop problem tasks and a didcatic approach that invite all pupils in primary education (including weaker students) to solve mathematical problems and to discuss them together afterwards.
Results
- 20 mathematical problems for primary school grades 2-6, tested and adjusted based on teachers' practical experiences;
- Accompanying teacher manuals;
- Collected in a booklet and as a digital file.
- Research results on mathematical problem-solving in primary education.
- Publication of the project results in professional journals on teaching and learning, and during presentations at conferences and an online final event.
Approach
The developed materials are being tested in the classroom by primary school teachers in the Netherlands and Flanders and students from HU-Pabo. They test the problems and the accompanying teaching methods, and they share their practical experiences via online questionnaires. In addition, an online interview is conducted with a few in-service and pre-service teachers.
Impact for education or professional practice
Through the development and wide dissemination of tested problems and didcatic guidelines, the project supports the professional development of teachers and contributes to an inclusive learning environment in which all students- and especially the most vulnerable- get the opportunity to gain experiences of succes with mathematical problem-solving. The collaboration with the Kangoeroe organisation, which has a wide reach among primary schools, will have a positive impact on the implementation and sustainablility of the results.
