Marjolein Kool

Researcher

Marjolein Kool (1958) is senior lecturer in Mathematics and Didactics at the Theo Thijssen Institute, the teacher-training for primary education programme of HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, where she develops and teaches the mathematics programme. She is also a researcher at the Research group on Mathematical and analytical competence of professionals.

Marjolein studied Mathematics and Dutch Language and Literature. She taught mathematics and Dutch in secondary education and was editor-in-chief of the mathematics magazine ‘Volgens Bartjens’. She was project manager and education developer at the Freudenthal Institute and senior mathematics didactics teacher at Hogeschool Domstad. She has been affiliated with HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht since 2010. Marjolein has also published various collections of poetry.

Marjolein obtained her doctorate with a dissertation on the mathematical vocabulary in Central Netherlands. Her dissertation was included in the Digital Library for Dutch Literature. She is now conducting a study into the education of mathematics, with a focus on the profession-specific numeracy of primary school teachers and the role that IT can play in acquiring this. In 2018 she received a Comenius grant for her work.
