With this project, we develop a TIC toolbox for patients and healthcare professionals in the ED, supported by literature review, participatory observations, action research, interviews, and focus groups. In collaboration with management, healthcare professionals, and experts by experience, the project will deliver a context-sensitive toolbox that enables the implementation of TIC in EDs.

Objective

The development of a 'Trauma-Informed Care' toolbox for patients and healthcare professionals in the ED, aimed at improving patient outcomes and creating a safer and healthier working environment for healthcare professionals.

Results

  • Overview of TIC components applied in various healthcare contexts and their relevance for the ED setting
  • Insight into factors influencing the applicability of the TIC toolbox within the ED context
  • A TIC toolbox

Approach

Findings from the literature review and participatory observations will form the foundation for developing the TIC toolbox, which will be created using action research. The prototype will then be tested for feasibility and usability through an in-situ walk-through with healthcare professionals and experts by experience, using clinical vignettes.

"The ED as frontline of healthcare. Let’s make sure it’s a safe place, for both patients and their health care professionals."

Education impact

During the execution of the project, curricula of both bachelor's and vocational training programs can already be enriched with relevant knowledge and skills. This will be achieved through guest lectures by the involved researchers. After the project, it can be assessed to what extent Trauma-Informed Care will be structurally embedded in the curricula of the Bachelor of Nursing and the Bachelor of Medical Assistance. Additionally, the outcomes can serve as input for newly developed training and educational materials within the advanced training for ED nurses, methodology education, the Master in Nursing Science, and the Emergency Medicine program.
