Nature as an actor
Objective
We explore innovative forms of representation, including legal frameworks, co-creative governance and ecocentric collaboration. Design makes ecological interests institutionally visible and testable. Central question: how can nature be effectively represented through co-design in urban decision-making in Nijmegen and Rotterdam?
Results
With Nijmegen, Rotterdam, Eelerwoude, Studio Raakvlak, Studio Snijboon and Erwin Elling, we develop a design-driven blueprint for ecocentric governance, delivering knowledge, methods and tools to structurally position nature as a full partner.
Approach
We apply multispecies ethnography, participatory action research and co-design tools such as Mission Mapping in pilot projects. The project follows a policy-by-design approach, actively designing, testing and iteratively improving policy processes.
Education impact
The project strengthens education and professional practice by actively involving HU students in co-design processes, data analysis, and scenario development. They work on real-life research challenges in collaboration with practice partners. In doing so, they develop skills in ecocentric design and governance. For professional practice, the project delivers concrete tools, methods, and a blueprint for nature-inclusive decision-making.
