Pioneer Appropriate urological care in community nursing and nursing home care in Utrecht

Healthcare is under pressure. Yet, urological procedures that are ineffective—or even harmful—are still being carried out. This waists valuable time, money, and resources. In this project, we explore how to reduce such care in community nursing and nursing homes, and what this change brings.

Objective

The goal is to remove (de-implement) ineffective urological procedures from care. We focus on interventions listed in the Beter Laten lists for district nursing care and nursing home care. We investigate what supports or hinders this change, and how it affects workload, satisfaction of professionals and clients, and the use of time and resources.

We focus, for example, on discontinuing bladder irrigations aimed at preventing infections, which have proven ineffective. Reducing unnecessary care improves quality, reduces burden, and ensures care is more appropriate for both clients and professionals.

Results

All participating care teams will develop and implement their own plan to phase out non-beneficial urological care. They gain insight into what helps or hinders this process. The project delivers practical knowledge on what works. Outcomes will be shared through publications and presentations.

Duration

01 February 2025 - 31 January 2027

Approach

The project includes several sessions with care teams, where non-beneficial urological interventions are selected, analysed, and addressed. Through practice-based research, each team develops a tailored improvement plan and implements it with support from researchers and experts.

Impact on education

The results help care professionals make better-informed decisions in daily practice. The knowledge gained will be shared within care organizations and integrated into vocational and higher nursing education. This way, students learn early on what appropriate care is and how to reduce ineffective practices—strengthening their skills and preparing them for the care of tomorrow.
