ResponScale project

  • Project
  • January 2025 – January 2029

The ResponScale project focuses on the responsible scaling of innovations developed with and for the Dutch mental healthcare sector (GGZ). The accessibility and quality of care are currently under pressure. Improvements are needed to align capacity with growing demand and to better match patient needs with available services.
Digital technology and Data-driven innovation are expected to play a key role in addressing these challenges. However, scaling digital solutions has proven difficult: innovations must be implemented within specific contexts, making uniform adoption impossible. Additionally, ethical, legal, and social concerns often hinder the progress of digital innovations.
This project is based on the idea that the spread of innovation lags behind because there is insufficient consideration of how these technologies can be scaled in a socially responsible way.

Richtext 3

Scientists, businesses, healthcare organizations, and regional economic councils are currently prioritizing digital innovation as a solution to the capacity challenges facing the mental healthcare sector (GGZ), and to better align patient needs with available services. This has led to promising applications. Researchers will collaborate with relevant stakeholders to learn from two case studies in which a digital innovation is implemented and scaled. This will provide insights into the similarities and differences in how scaling methodologies can be successfully applied.

Results

Together with our partners, we are developing a toolkit for responsible scaling. This toolkit includes instruments to help stakeholders understand each other’s perspectives, assumptions, interests, and requirements; to work in a context-sensitive manner; to gather multiple views on the problem and solution space; to organize the innovation process as an iterative trajectory; to develop business models; to assess and monitor the innovation process; and to make informed decisions about the direction to take using decision trees.

Approach

HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht is part of one of the three work packages: Work Package 1 (WP1). From this work package, HU supports the other two in developing an appropriate scaling methodology. In WP1, we develop theories and methods for responsible scaling, inspired by key enabling approaches such as participatory action research and co-creation.
