Many adolescents with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) experience challenges returning to daily physical activities and sports after treatment. Project RESTART therefore develops a personalized approach that supports pediatric physical therapists in guiding these adolescents and their parents towards an active return to everyday life.

RESTART

Objective

The aim of this project is to develop a practice‑based intervention that supports pediatric physical therapists in guiding adolescents with ALL in resuming physical activities. The intervention is tailored to the specific medical and psychosocial challenges these adolescents may experience and provides practical tools for care close to home, with attention to parent coaching and collaboration between primary and secondary care.

Results

  • Insight into the needs, barriers, and facilitators experienced by adolescents, parents, and pediatric physical therapists in improving physical fitness and participation in physical activities.
  • A developed and tested user-friendly guideline with practical recommendations for (pediatric) physical therapists.
  • A personalized intervention for adolescents with ALL and their parents, aimed at improving physical fitness and participation in physical activities.
  • A practical collaboration framework with clear roles and processes to support adolescents with ALL through collaboration between pediatric physical therapists in primary and secondary care.

Approach

We combine literature reviews with generative interviews, focus groups, and co-creation sessions. Across different work packages, we develop an international practice guideline, a personalized intervention, and a collaboration framework aimed at increasing participation in physical activities among adolescents with ALL.

Education impact

Project RESTART strengthens pediatric physical therapy practice by developing practical tools to support adolescents with ALL in returning to an active and independent life. By addressing physical fitness and physical activity during and after treatment, pediatric physical therapists support participation in school, sports, and social activities and contribute to reducing long-term health effects.
The impact on education is realized through integrating the acquired knowledge into the curriculum and through active involvement of students in the project.
