The SIIA Compass
Sustainability and digitalisation are becoming increasingly intertwined within organisations. In practice, it proves difficult to gain an overview of the various roles, responsibilities and actions involved. After all, the so-called ‘Twin Transformation’ calls not only for technological or sustainable expertise, but for organisation-wide collaboration.
Objective
Irene Jonkers and Tara Vester from the Research Group Organizations in Digital Transition (HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht) developed the SIIA Compass together with NCDD. This practice-oriented tool provides insight into concrete practices for organizations integrating sustainability and digital transformation, and the collaboration required. The Compass is available as a report, workshop format, interactive tool, and Mural template.
Users choose their own entry point: general inspiration, actionable insights from a specific role, collaboration with other roles, or cross-cutting themes such as human-centred digitalization and circularity. This helps them identify relevant practices, involved roles, and how practices can reinforce each other.
Results
The SIIA Compass is available online as a report (including a workshop format), a digital tool and a Mural template. It helps users discover relevant practices, stakeholders and opportunities for collaboration and strengthening connections based on their own role or specific challenge. At the same time, the SIIA Compass is explicitly a work in progress: applying it in research, education and practice can generate new insights and contribute to its further development.
Approach
Based on expert interviews, NCDD materials, and academic literature, we mapped 205 practices, related roles, and collaboration. The first version was launched in September 2026. Together with stakeholders, we continue to develop the SIIA Compass.
Launch of the SIIA CompassĀ
On Monday 28 September 2026, the National Conference on Sustainable Digitalisation took place at Gooiland Events in Hilversum. The SIIA Compass was officially launched during a break-out session.
Recap to launch SIIA-CompassEducation impact
For professional practice, the SIIA Compass offers a shared language and concrete perspectives for action. Organisations can use the workshop format and Mural template to engage executives, managers, employees and experts in conversation about what they are already doing and which next step fits. In education, the tool can help students discover that sustainable digitalisation is an organisation-wide change, and what role they can play in it as future professionals.
HU researchers involved in the research
The SIIA Compass approaches sustainable and digital transformation as a coherent whole of practices, roles, tasks and underlying challenges. The result is not a blueprint, maturity model or exhaustive checklist. Organisations differ in mission, size, sector, stage of development and available capacity. The SIIA Compass offers a well-founded and structured starting point for recognising practices, exploring room for action and determining targeted next steps.
The roles in the SIIA Compass are deliberately broadly defined and do not exhaustively reflect every role within every organisation. Look at which role best matches your tasks, responsibilities and expertise. If your work spans several areas, you can also search from multiple roles. Alternatively, instead of a single role, you can look at one or more role domains that come closest. Do you think your role is genuinely missing? Please contact us at SIIAKompas@hu.nl, so we can develop the SIIA Compass further.
The SIIA Compass deliberately works with roles rather than fixed job titles. A role comprises a coherent set of tasks and responsibilities and does not necessarily correspond to a position in the organisational chart. One person can fulfil multiple roles, and one role can be shared across several people or parts of the organisation. Is your job title not listed? Then also search by roles, goals and example job titles that match your tasks, responsibilities and expertise.
Contribution to the SDGs
The SIIA Compass helps organisations shape digitalisation sustainably, with attention to circularity, responsible IT use and human-centredness. In doing so, it contributes to SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). The collaboration with the NCDD and its use in education align with SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) and SDG 4 (Quality Education).
