Why choose a double qualification?
- Greater academic challenge: deepen your expertise in more than one subject area.
- Stronger career prospects: broaden your employability within your school and gain greater flexibility throughout your career.
- Broader educational perspective: contribute to innovative education from multiple disciplinary viewpoints. This adds real pedagogical value.
- Efficient study route: earn 2 qualifications within a structured pathway, without doubling your workload. Overlapping modules are carefully aligned, so there is no unnecessary repetition. Scheduling and teaching placements are taken into account when you choose the double qualification route.
- Study together: follow the pathway alongside other students—you do not have to figure everything out on your own.
Which combinations can you choose?
You can combine 2 language programmes. The following combinations are available for the Teacher Education programmes, both full-time (FT) and part-time (PT):
Would you like to combine Teacher Education with another (Dutch-taught) school subject than a language? To discuss the possibilities, please contact marleen.ijzerman@hu.nl.
What does the double qualification route look like?
Whether you become a teacher of English or French, your role as an educator remains the same. You therefore complete the general pedagogical and didactic components of the programme only once. Certain subject-specific modules are also followed once, or partially combined.
In most cases, you begin with your first programme and add modules from the second programme at a later stage. This allows you to settle into student life and the teaching profession first. You will use your minor space to follow modules from the second programme, gradually building your expertise without extending the overall duration of your studies.
No double fees
When pursuing a double degree, you do not pay double tuition fees. Each academic year, you pay the tuition fee for one programme only.
What should you take into account?
- A double qualification requires commitment and discipline—studying 2 programmes is not something you can do lightly.
- On average, you should expect approximately 8 additional hours of study per week.
- Timetables for both programmes may be spread across multiple days.
Can you withdraw during your studies?
If the pathway proves too demanding, or if you decide to focus on one subject instead, you can switch to a single qualification without negative consequences.
