Collective Energy Districts -CED Merwede- enable future-proof urban development, even with a congested urban electricity grids. By organizing energy locally, collectively, and intelligently, we create flexibility in energy grids, support sustainable city development, and improve residents quality of life.

Objective

Collective Energy Districts for the Future (CED) is an innovation project in which partners develop and test new ways to organise energy locally and collectively at district level. In the Merwede area in Utrecht (the Netherlands), they are working on an energy system that creates room to continue building, decarbonising and living, even with a congested electricity grid. By combining technical, organisational and social innovations, the project shows how urban development can continue.

Results

As University of Applied Science we research, test, and monitor what is needed to ensure that a Collective Energy District functions effectively in the areas of:

  • Technology
  • Organization
  • Social and behavioral innovation

Approach

In co-creation with the partners in the research project, we define indicators for monitoring. Together with the stakeholders of the future neighborhood, we explore possible solutions for a portfolio of social and behavioral innovations.

The project is funded by the European Urban Initiative. The insights from CED are translated into an approach that can be applied in other cities across the Netherlands and Europe.

Co-funding

The project is co-funded by the European Union

Education impact

Grid congestion is a major and urgent societal challenge. Through CED Merwede, students are introduced to this topic and work on concrete and realistic solutions and prototypes that are tested directly in the neighborhood.

"Merwede could develop into a European model for Collective Energy District in the field of energy innovation and sustainability,” says the municipality of Utrecht."
