Numeracy and debt - searching for relations

  • Project
  • February 2023 – January 2027

In our daily lives we regularly encounter numbers, especially in a financial context. To deal with these numbers in a good way, numeracy is necessary. This PhD research aims to understand the relations between numeracy and debt.

Objective

This study focuses on the question of which aspects of numeracy, as described in the Common European Numeracy Framework (CENF), are associated with financial problems. The CENF emphasises that numeracy encompasses not only knowledge and skills, but also attitudes, higher-order skills, and context. The aim of the study is to gain insight into the relationship between these aspects and financial problems.

Results

  • Overview of existing research insights on numeracy and financial problems;
  • Understanding of how people with debt experience numeracy and the role it plays in their financial situation;
  • Insight into the perspectives of debt counsellors on the influence of numeracy in financial problems.

Duration

01 February 2023 - 31 January 2027

Approach

We investigate this question through a combination of a literature review, interviews, and focus group discussions. First the literature review will be completed. The gained knowledge will be tested and complemented through the interviews. The focus group discussions will deepen the gained knowledge, by adding the perspective of debt counselors.
