Professional Doctorate - a research-intensive learning pathway

  • Project
  • January 2023 – December 2029
In 2023, HU and other Dutch universities of applied sciences launched a pilot for their own doctoral program, known as the ‘Professional Doctorate’ (PD). This is a new program that focuses on practice-based research. Candidates follow a research-intensive learning pathway lasting 4 to 6 years to become highly qualified, research-oriented professionals who learn to intervene in complex practices at EQF level 8.

Goal

The ambition is to develop Professional Doctorate (PD) programs that add value for the candidate, society, the professional field, and education, and to embed these within the Dutch Higher Education and Research Act (WHW). The practice-oriented PD programs complement the existing PhD tracks at universities, which are more focused on scientific research.

A dedicated doctoral track within universities of applied sciences is seen as an important and necessary addition to the higher education system. The Professional Doctorate (PD) enables a continuous learning pathway from associate degree through bachelor's and master's to doctorate within the professional domain, and is closely integrated with the rest of the higher professional education offerings.

Results

HU has capacity for a total of 15 Professional Doctorate (PD) tracks in the domains of Health & Well-being, Energy & Sustainability, Technology & Digitalization, and Learning & Professionalization.

Duration

01 January 2023 - 31 December 2029

Approach

HU researchers:

  • develop and deliver PD programs
  • supervise (prospective) PD candidates
  • are actively involved in the national Program Team, the Catalyst, and various working groups.

An article on the four PD roles has been published, co-authored by HU colleagues Daan Andriessen, Ed de Jonge, and Cindy Kuiper, as well as an article on pioneering the program by HU colleagues Cindy Kuiper, Lia van Doorn, Elly de Bruijn and Daan Andriessen.
