Creative research methods – catalyst in transitions
This project explores how creative research methods, such as storytelling, visualisation, theatre and art-based research, can help understand and advance complex transitions. Through podcast research, we collect experiences and translate them into effective principles and practical guidance for researchers and professionals.
Objective
The project aims to understand how creative research methods contribute to transition processes: which dynamics they reveal and how they stimulate collective reflection and dialogue. The resulting knowledge will be translated into accessible tools for practice-based research and education.
Results
• A series of 15–20 podcast interviews.
• Insight into effective principles, opportunities and challenges.
• An accessible methods map with examples and design principles.
• A mini-symposium for knowledge sharing.
• Integration into the Creative Research Methods programme.
Approach
We conduct exploratory practice-based research through 15–20 podcast interviews with researchers and professionals. The interviews serve both data collection and knowledge sharing. Findings are analysed and translated into effective principles, a methods map and a concluding mini-symposium.
The project aligns with HU University of Applied Sciences’ mission to use practice-based research to support transitions in education. Its outputs broaden the methodological repertoire of researchers, lecturers and students and will become part of the Creative Research Methods programme offered by the Teaching & Learning Center.

Impact
The project strengthens the quality, impact and accessibility of practice-based research into complex transitions. Researchers and education professionals gain concrete methods to reveal underlying patterns and tensions and to stimulate collective reflection, dialogue and movement.
