DEEL - Digital Engineering Exploration Lab

DEEL - Digital Engineering Exploration Lab
  • Project
  • June 2025 – October 2027

DEEL connects digital innovation and collaboration in engineering education. Students work with Digital Twins – integrated digital and physical models to explore realistic system transitions. This helps them grow into system thinkers who develop data-driven solutions for societal challenges.

Objective

The goal of DEEL is to educate students to become digital system thinkers who can effectively collaborate across disciplinary boundaries. By developing integrated physical and digital learning environments using Digital Twins, students are prepared to design innovative solutions for complex societal transitions.

Results

DEEL strengthens multidisciplinary and digital education within the IDE institute by educating students to become digital system thinkers through the use of Digital Twins.

Duration

01 June 2025 - 31 October 2027

Approach

The project develops and tests new educational formats using Digital Twins in multidisciplinary student teams. Through pilots, evaluations, and collaboration with Quest, INNO, and research groups, knowledge is built and embedded within the IDE institute.

Impact for education

DEEL strengthens education within the IDE institute by placing digital and multidisciplinary collaboration at its core. Through Digital Twins, students learn to understand and design complex systems, enhancing their role as digital system thinkers. This results in better-prepared technical graduates who can respond to societal transitions. The approach fosters educational innovation, increases student engagement, and provides teachers with new tools to shape future-oriented, practice-based, and interdisciplinary education.

Cofinancing

This project is financed by a Senior Fellow Scholarship as part of the Comenius program, organized by NRO (Nationaal Regieorgaan Onderwijsonderzoek).
