Chronic stress in the first 1,000 days of life is often difficult to recognize. When there is insufficient balance between stressors and protective factors, stress can affect a child’s health and development, both during their upbringing and later in life.

Objective

HEALS aims to prevent chronic stress in (future) parents and children during the first 1000 days, recognize it early, and provide optimal support to parents. In co-creation, we develop practical tools that can help midwifery practices and Child and Youth Health Care (JGZ) organizations to discuss, identify, and address stress.

Results

The Co-Design research group, together with TNO, organizes co-creation sessions with (future) parents and professionals from midwifery practices and child health care organizations to develop support tools for the prevention of ELS (early life stress).

Approach

The Co-Design research group provides methods and tools for co-creation sessions, helps conduct them, and reflects on the course and outcome of sessions. In addition, we investigate whether and how participants develop design capacity.

Education impact

HEALS delivers three products for professionals from midwifery practices and Child and Youth Health Care (JGZ) organizations:

  • A conversation aid that helps professionals discuss stress in children during the first 1000 days with (future) parents.
  • An assessment tool that indicates the likelihood that a child will experience stress or is at risk of developing it during the first 1000 days.
  • Decision support that helps professionals determine, together with parents, which support is appropriate.
