CARE: Critical AI Literacy in Research and Education

  • Project
  • January 2022 – December 2027

CARE strengthens digital information skills and critical AI literacy in education, research, and practice. We develop tools, training, and learning activities that help students, teachers, and professionals use AI responsibly and reflectively.

By translating state-of-the-art research into directly applicable tools and interventions, we make AI literacy tangible. All materials are available open access, allowing both education and professional practice to benefit directly.

Objective

The aim of CARE is to support students, teachers, and professionals in developing critical AI literacy and digital information skills. In doing so, we contribute to equity, responsible AI use, and fostering deep learning in education and professional practice.

"I often refer schools to CARE’s work. Their research is thorough and widely applicable."

Results

  • Development of lesson materials and digital tools (e.g., KRITIKOS app, AI diary, SAFE procedure) to foster critical AI use.
  • Open Educational Resources (OER) on Critical AI in Research and Education, published via EduSources.
  • Novel research methods and rubrics for responsible and transparent AI use.
  • Professionalising teachers and researchers on critical AI use

"With an eye for practical application, but also for nuance and depth, CARE consistently manages to translate the abstract into concrete solutions, even though this technology is still developing rapidly. They're an important sparring partner for me."

Approach

CARE follows open science principles. We combine systematic research with co-creation: developing evidence-based tools and interventions together with teachers, students, and professional partners.

Impact on education

CARE has a direct impact on education by embedding information and AI literacy structurally into curricula. Through minors, learning pathways, training, and open access teaching materials, we reach students, teachers, and researchers. This contributes to deep learning, critical thinking, and equity in an era where AI plays an increasingly central role.
