Objective

Develop a systematic collection of interaction possibilities. It should become a pattern library that serves as a source of concrete knowledge about interaction possibilities in recommender systems and their impact for students and professionals, to be used in design assignments.

The professional field is strengthened by the richness of researched and validated examples. Education can integrate the pattern library into the curriculum. For researchers, publishing accessibly in the pattern library is a way to bridge the research–practice gap and allow more of their research to be applied in the field.

Results

An Algorithmic Affordances Pattern Library: a systematic collection of interaction possibilities that gathers examples and annotates each one with recent research on impact and applications. This resource enables designers to contribute to Responsible AI.

Approach

Systematically gathering interaction possibilities through open and closed card sorting and pattern writing. Evaluating the impact on interaction quality in different decision-making contexts. Developing a prototype of the pattern library and testing its impact on the design process through case studies.

Education impact

This project creates impact by promoting the design of Responsible AI, which is crucial as more decisions are supported by algorithms. This project directly impacts education by providing educators and students with a valuable resource to design and understand Responsible AI. By developing a pattern library, this project helps designers create AI systems that are safe, fair, transparent, and accountable, ensuring that AI supports ethical decision-making in both education and professional practice.
